Why the wear-layer in luxury vinyl flooring matters

Luxury vinyl flooring (LVF) is incredibly tough. As a result, it's considered one of the most kid-and pet-friendly floorings.

That's because of the wear layer. When shopping for LVF, that subject is sure to come up, so here's what you need to know.

What exactly is a wear layer?

This is a robust, clear melamine coating on luxury vinyl plank or tile. It is placed between the design layer and the top finish.

With a wear layer, you won't need to replace planks or tiles often. Instead, they add extra protection, guarding the floor against scratches, scuffs, and dents.

They also help with waterproofing because it keeps spills from absorbing. It's also where the embossing takes place.

How much should they measure?

First, you must understand that wear layers are always measured separately from the product itself. So, for example, if you choose luxury vinyl tile or plank with a 10-mm thickness, it doesn't include the wear layer.

Wear layers are measured separately in mils. If you have kids or pets or if it's in a high traffic area, go as high as 20-mils.

If you have moderately heavy foot traffic and the subfloor's in good shape, you might get away with 12-mils. It is best to discuss this with one of our flooring experts.

Now that you’ve chosen LVT or LVP

Here's how to take care of it. When installed properly and cared for, it can last over 20 years.

1. Sweep regularly with a soft brush or broom.

2. Clear with a manufacturer-approved cleaner.

3. Add a bit of regular white vinegar to remove stubborn, stuck-on dirt.
